About Dr. Kavanagh · Seguin

Your eye surgeon in Seguin

Dr. Kavanagh brought advanced eye surgery to Seguin.

He was the first ophthalmologist to perform laser cataract surgery, corneal transplant and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) in Seguin, and the first to perform seton surgery here, the glaucoma drainage-implant operation used when pressure cannot be controlled any other way.

He is the only fellowship-trained glaucoma subspecialist in Guadalupe County, so Seguin patients with complex glaucoma do not have to travel to San Antonio for specialist care.

Laser cataract surgery

Bladeless precision with LENSAR ALLY and LenSx

For the most delicate steps of cataract surgery, Dr. Kavanagh uses a femtosecond laser guided by a 3D scan of your eye. The laser performs each step with computer-controlled, micron-level accuracy.

  1. CapsulotomyA perfectly round, centered opening in the lens capsule, so your new lens implant sits exactly where it should.
  2. Breaking up and softening the cataractThe laser divides and softens the cataract first, so less ultrasound energy is needed to remove it.
  3. Correcting corneal astigmatismPrecise arcuate incisions reduce astigmatism, aligned to your eye with iris registration.

Questions

Seguin patients often ask

Can I have cataract surgery in Seguin?

Yes. Dr. Kavanagh performs surgery at GRMC Outpatient in Seguin, and your exams and follow-ups are at our office at 908 E Court St.

What is seton surgery?

Seton surgery places a small drainage implant (a tube shunt, such as an Ahmed valve) to lower eye pressure in advanced or hard-to-control glaucoma. Dr. Kavanagh was the first ophthalmologist to perform it in Seguin.

Do you see patients from La Vernia and Gonzales?

Yes. Along with Seguin, there are offices in La Vernia and Gonzales. Call 830-379-3937 to book at any location.

What is MIGS, and am I a candidate?

MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) uses tiny implants or micro-incisions to improve the eye's natural drainage. It is often combined with cataract surgery and can reduce the need for daily drops.
